A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has restrained the recently constituted commission of inquiry into political killings in Port Harcourt by the state governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, from going ahead with its activities in the state.
The commission was to commence sitting next Monday after it had received memoranda from interested persons.
Respondents in the suit are Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, chairman of the commission, nine other members of his body, Governor Amaechi, Attorney General of the state, Nigeria Police Force, Inspector General of Police and the state Commissioner of Police.
Trial judge, Justice H. Nganjiwa, in his ruling in the suit by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, challenging the commission, restrained “the respondents from taking further steps in connection with the sitting of the Commission of Inquiry instituted by Governor Amaechi, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutor injunction.”
The court noted that in view of the urgency attached to the matter, time was of essence, and abridged the time for the respondents to file their response, which they must do within three days upon service of processes on the plaintiff.
Justice Nganjiwa adjourned further hearing in the matter till May 6.
