SA Raises Concern Over Mercenaries In War Against Boko Haram

            The South African government has expressed concerns over the use of South Africans as mercenaries in Nigeria in the war against the Boko Haram terrorist group.
Although, the Nigerian government through the coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, said the foreigners were being used as training partners, South Africa says its men may be involved in fighting.
Nigeria recently acquired helicopter gunships and tanks from South Africa and former Soviet Union countries and needs technical assistance to handle the facility.

INEC Says 81% Of Eligible Voters Have Collected Their PVCs

                The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that a total of 12, 929,204 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are yet to be collected.
According to an update on the breakdown of PVCs collected so far by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu, a total of 55,904,272 million or 81.22 per cent has been distributed out of 68,833,476 million PVCs produced.
According to INEC, the figure released was based on the number of PVCs collected as of March 12.
Following the rescheduling of the general elections, INEC had extended the deadline for collection of PVCs till March 8 with a further extension announced last Sunday till March 22, which is six days to the presidential election.

US Kicks Against Further Election Postponement

             Nigerians in the United States of America have expressed dissatisfaction with the postponement of the general elections, insisting that efforts must be made to ensure elections hold as rescheduled.
They said they were monitoring events back home ahead of the March 28 polls, stressing how critical holding the elections are.
Channels Television’s correspondent in Washington, Maria Byrd, said many Nigerians in the U.S. are using social media and other forms of advocacy to influence the electoral process.

Again--Blasts Hit IDPs Camp In Maiduguri

            Two blasts, Saturday evening, went off at one of the camps accommodating thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri metropolis. The explosions happened at about 6:15pm
Vanguard quoted unconfirmed sources to have said that the incident took place at Yerwa Government Girls Secondary School. Others said that the incident occurred at Arabic Teacher’s College, Maiduguri. The two schools share a fence, but no educational activities have been happening in either schools in recent times, as they have become camps accommodating some IDPs in Borno.

              Another suicide bomb vest duly primed by the terroristsTroops fighting against the Boko Haram Terrorists in Nigeria’s north-east have discovered a Bomb Making factory in Yobe State.

              The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), said in Kaduna on Wednesday that it was part of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party’s antics to use religion to divide Nigerians in forging a common front on the inevitable change they desire in the country ahead of the rescheduled March 28 presidential election.
According to him, the PDP was only using religion, which he described as a “matter of personal conviction”, to divide the country.
Buhari, who spoke through his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at an inter-faith engagement in Kaduna on Wednesday, said, “And they have succeeded in making some of us victims of the tales, which they invent, propagate and sell as the gospel truth to gullible listeners; while it is all nothing but tissues of lies”.
The former head of state noted that in spite of what detractors had said and still saying, he was not a religious fanatic of any sort “and I have never been”, he stressed.

Mr. Adeosun, who spoke when he received a team of newsmen on tour of communities recently recaptured from the Boko Haram insurgents in his office in Maiduguri, vowed that the military will defeat the insurgents.
“Terrorism will not define the Nigerian Armed Forces.
“The armed forces of Nigeria will define the space that is Nigeria and recover every inch of our territory and ensure that terrorism is defeated in our land”, he said.

(CNN)Two police officers shot and wounded while standing guard outside the Ferguson, Missouri, police department early Thursday were deliberately targeted in what a police official called an "ambush."
Such ambush-style attacks were the leading method in the surging number of shooting deaths of law enforcement officers, according to the nonprofit, Washington-based National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
The shootings were a chilling low point in the nonstop protests in the city since a Ferguson police officer shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown in August.

          An explosive device has injured five police officers and two other people in the Colombian capital Bogota in the early hours.
The device, which was packed with shrapnel, went off as a police convoy was driving through the southern neighbourhood of Quiroga.
It is not yet clear who may be behind the attack.
Small-scale explosions are not unusual in the capital, but this device seems more complex than previous ones.

Omotoso was rescued in Ajia, a remote village in the Egbeda Local Government Area of Ibadan.The police said $1m was demanded from Omotoso’s family.

Whale Off Mexico Killed A Woman

             A Canadian woman died after a grey whale crashed into the tourist boat she was on off Mexico's Pacific coast.
The woman had been snorkelling off the north-western resort of Cabo San Lucas.
The exact circumstances of the incident are unclear. Firefighters say the whale jumped up and landed on the boat, throwing the victim into the water.

National Assembly Cuts 2015 Budget By N30bn

             The National Assembly has cut down its budget from N150 billion ($751 million) to N120 billion ($600 million) to accommodate the shortfall in expected government revenue as oil prices continue to fall.
The legislators have also settled on $53 per barrel as the official oil benchmark for the 2015 budget. This development came following a meeting where both chambers of the National Assembly converged to deliberate based on their respective positions on the 2015 budget benchmark.

Federal Government Has Spent More Than N34bn On Education In Kano – Sambo

                  The Vice President, Namadi Sambo, has said that the Federal Government, has so far spent over N34 billion on the provision of various developmental programmes and projects in higher institutions in Kano State.
Sambo disclosed this at an interactive session with members of the Bayero University Kano (BUK) community, when he visited to commission and lay the foundation for various projects.
According to him, the money was spent through intervention programmes under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND). This, he said, was because, the government was conscious of the fact that education was the bedrock for any meaningful development in the society.

           Sara Bahai's decision to become Afghanistan's only known female taxi driver has earned her alot of death threats..Bahai, now around 40 years old, had already spent much of her life defying taboos in Afghanistan, where women are widely regarded as inferior to men and discouraged from working outside the home.
According to AP,She never married, she said, because she had to support her parents and siblings and feared a husband would prevent her from working. With no children of her own she adopted two boys, now both in high school. When Taliban insurgents shot and killed her brother-in-law, she took in her sister and seven nieces and nephews. She now supports a dozen people.

               A baby born in India with a head attached to its stomach was given a lifesaving surgery to remove it.
The baby girl who was born to a 22-year-old woman Amlekha Bairva at a  small government-run hospital on FEB13, had the head of her  parasitic twin attached to her stomach.
The baby was rushed to another hospital in Jaipur, northern India and 13 days later, a team of doctors successfully detached the head – which was completely formed and attached by the neck to the stomach – in a 90-minute operation.

                  Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Monday said his administration and the All Progressives Congress have been delivering on electoral promises made to Lagosians.
The governor, however, said that the same could not be said of the Peoples Democratic Party-controlled Federal Government, which had not been able to fulfil many of its promises, including the construction of the Second Niger Bridge.
Fashola spoke during the inauguration of the 2.18 kilometres Glover Road in the Ikoyi area of Lagos.
The governor noted that the inauguration was the fulfillment of the promise made during the inauguration of the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, where he promised to upgrade some roads in Ikoyi.
He added that Glover Road was the first to be upgraded.

                    While the residents of Maiduguri metropolis were trying to overcome the shock of the last weekend multiple explosion, the town was again was thrown into another pandemonium Tuesday when another heavy bomb blast hit the famous Monday Market Maiduguri killing at least 34 people with 42 others injured.
                   Hamisu who identified himself as a commercial driver who dropped passengers just before the El-Kanami round about near the market some few meters from the spot of the blast told our correspondent that “ I  was in my  car (Volkswagen Golf) dropping passengers that I picked from Gomari straight to Kasuwa through the Post Office peacefully and smoothly. When the last passenger was alighting from the car and I was giving change to the other passengers, then I heard heavy strange sound that shook everywhere and anything that was around the place, Hamisu Said.

                  The apex northern socio-cultural group, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on Monday lampooned the Coordinator of the Odua Peoples Congress, OPC, Otunba Gani Adams, over his call for the sack of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega.
The OPC leader, according to the ACF, had called for the sack of the INEC boss on the basis of the distribution of the Permanent Voter Cards (PVC), introduction of card readers and the creation of 30,000 polling units, which he claimed was to the advantage of the north.

               President Goodluck Jonathan has announced the disengagement of Martin Luther Agwai as chairman of the federal government’s Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).

The special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Reuben Abati, made the announcement, in a terse statement on Tuesday.
                  He however failed to explain the reasons for the sudden removal Agwai.

PDP Governors Say Hopes Of Nigerians Secure Under Party’s Leadership

            Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are gathered in Lagos for a meeting aimed at ensuring credible general elections.
During an interactive session with journalists on Monday night ahead of a scheduled meeting slated to hold on Tuesday, Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, said the postponement of the election has helped to reduce the tension in the country, especially following the victory recorded by the military in the northeast.

Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Godswill Akpabio, explained that the forum’s meeting was not convened due to panic or pressure from any quarters.

AIT Fire Was Caused By High Voltage, Only AC Was Damaged


                   Tragedy was averted on Monday morning after fire engulfed the studio of the African Independent Television, Lagos State.
                     It was learnt that the fire started at 9am after an air conditioner in the studio was affected by high voltage electricity.
                    Men of the Lagos State Fire Service from Agege, Ikeja and Alausa divisions were said to have been mobilised to the scene around 9.30am in three water trucks.
