26 Died, 28 Injured As Suicide Bomber Attacks Mosque In Maiduguri

                     A man lies in state hospital bed as he receives treatment for injuries sustained following a bomb blast that left dozens dead and many injured in Maiduguri, on March 8, 2015.
 Three bombings in northeast Nigeria's largest city of Maiduguri killed 58 people on March 7, 2015 and wounded 139 others, the area police chief said. Niger and Chad on March 8, 2015 launched major ground and air strikes in northeast Nigeria against Boko Haram, after the militants formally pledged allegiance to the Islamic state group in Syria and Iraq.

Buhari, Osibanjo Declare Assets

 

                 President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo have declared their assets, as required by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Code of Conduct Bureau on Friday acknowledged the submission of President Buhari’s and Vice President Osinbajo’s assets declaration forms submitted separately on May 28.

Why Fuel Subsidy Must Go {Part2}

                   While the National Assembly appears to be divided over the removal or retention of the subsidy regime, which is believed to be fraught with corruption, different parties are now quoting figures of how much has gone down since President Goodluck Jonathan’s government.
A former governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzo Kalu, last week said: “The Federal Government has spent N6.354 trillion as subsidy on petroleum products in the last five years, when President Goodluck Jonathan assumed leadership of Nigeria.”

How Jonathan, NASS Made Concessions

                      President Goodluck Jonathan was last night being waited upon to sign the Constitution Alteration Bill after a last minute agreement brokered by lawyers to the President and the National Assembly saw both sides make concessions in their month-long stand-off.

Court Stops NERC From Increasing Electricity Tariff

                    A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday restrained the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, (NERC), from implementing the new electricity tariff which was to take effect from June 1.

                    The Governing Council of Osun State University, UNIOSUN, has terminated the appointments of three principal officers of the state institution including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bashir Okesina with immediate effect.
The termination of their appointments followed the recommendations of a visitation panel set up by the Visitor to the university, Governor Rauf Aregbesola. The panel looked into the allegation of financial mismanagement in the institution.

ASUU Aondemns UNIOSUN Council For Recommending VC’s Sacking

            The Academic Staff Union of Universities at the Osun State University has condemned the  Governing Council of the institution for recommending the termination of appointment of its suspended Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bashir Okesina.
Although the alleged recommendation of the council,  headed  by Prof. Gabriel Olawoyin (SAN), has not been made public, the ASUU, in a statement by its Chairman, Dr. Oluseye Abiona, and other members of the executive, kicked against the recommendation describing it as prejudicial.

Court Declines To Stop Wike’s Swearing-in

                   A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, yesterday, refused an ex-parte application praying it to stop the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Kate Abiru, from swearing in the Rivers State governor-elect, Chief Nyesom Wike, on May 29.
Trial judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, who turned down the application, said granting such would amount to “adding insult upon the injury” of the people of Rivers State, who currently “have no judiciary.”

                        The President Elect, Mohammadu Buhari, on Wednesday  reiterated his readiness to work with any leader of the National Assembly, who emerges, irrespective of which part of the country he or she comes from.

                   Outgoing Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has advised incoming governors to ensure that there was no crack in the Governors’ Forum, saying that it was the division in their midst that resulted in the alleged looting of public funds at the centre.
Amaechi, yesterday, at a special Mass to mark his 50th birthday at the Corpus Christi Cathedral, Catholic Church, Port Harcourt, said the crack they witnessed in their forum as governors made it relatively difficult for them to confront the Federal Government over issues they were not clear about.

Amaechi Reveals When Money Started Missing In Federation Account

                  Governor, Mr Chibuike Amaechi of  Rivers state on Wednesday urged incoming governors not to allow anybody to divide the Nigeria Governors Forum.
Amaechi made the call at a church service to mark his 50th birthday at Corpus Christi Cathedral, Port Harcourt.

                    Last week, the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, told the nation in an interview with a national newspaper that he gets confused when Nigerians talk about subsidy.
He said: “One of the problems I have, other than the military, is the petroleum industry where I served for three and a half years under General Olusegun Obasanjo. When people start talking about subsidy I honestly get confused. I will tell you this, and I hope it will answer what you want to know. FG Releases N5billion To Purchase Stoves For Rural Women

                    The Federal government has released N5billion for the purchase of stoves for rural women across the country, under the National Clean Cooking Scheme, a programme launched by FG to discourage the use of Firewood for cooking.
Announcing the release of the funds, Minister of Environment, Laurientia Mallam, speaking during an inspection visit to the Velodrome at the National Stadium, Abuja, where some of the 750,000 stoves were being assembled, said the stoves will be distributed through the various Ministries of Environment.

                         Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida yesterday, expressed concern over the present situation in the country, adding that it needed the intervention of all Nigerians to join hands with the incoming administration to get the people out of the current problems.

                   Kaduna State Governor-elect, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, said on Tuesday that he will probe the outgoing administration of Governor Mukhtar Yero for depleting the resources of the state.
El-Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, stated this shortly after receiving the report of the All Progressives Congress Transition Committee in Kaduna.

                     National Association of Nigerian students, NANS has warned South Africa President,Jacob Zuma not to come to Nigeria for the Inauguration of President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari following what they described as his poor handling of the xenophobic attacks on some Africans including Nigerians in his country in April.
According to the statement released by the body, the failure of the South African President to apologize to Nigerians after the attacks is distasteful.
