Suspected members of dreaded Boko Haram sect on Sunday invaded Kwajaffa community of Hawul Local Government Area of Borno state killing 25 residents, before setting ablaze many houses, shops and a local church, reliable source and fleeing residents said.
The insurgents numbering over 20 fully armed with AK47 rifles, petrol bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) stormed the community at about 10pm on Sunday using two Hilux vehicles and 5 motorcycles and had a field day as they wrecked havoc by sacking the whole people from the village.
Kwajaffa, a predominantly Christian community located in a valley had witnessed series of devastating attacks by insurgents in recent past with killing of many residents and the destruction of Church of Brethren (EYN church), the most popular church with highest number of worshippers in the village.
It is located south east and about 20km drive from Azare, the council headquarters of Hawul which is south and about 215km drive to Maiduguri, the state capital.
One of the residents, Ahmad Ali told AFP that, “the residents thought the Islamist insurgents were going to preach and leave but in fact they opened fire on the crowd. They then went on setting fire to homes, burning half of the village before they left”.
Another lucky resident who fled the attack and did not want his name mentioned for security reasons, told our Correspondent that “the insurgents who stormed the area started chanting Allahu Akbar in Arabic (God is great) threatening residents that the new government of Gen. Mohammed Buhari will witness massive deadly attacks by insurgents more than what it was witnessed under the Jonathan led PDP administration”.
He noted that many people were killed and houses, as well as shops and a church were razed down by the terrorists, stressing that, most of those killed could not be buried as everybody was running out of the rocky community for his/her dear lives.
All effort to get confirmation from the security operatives proved abortive, but a credible security source who is not authorized to talk to the press confirmed the latest attack in Kwajaffa by Boko Haram sect, insisting that many lives were lost with property worth millions of naira destroyed on Sunday evening.
