Some male youths at the Kollington area of Alagbado, Abeokuta Expressway, on Saturday staged a football match tagged `PDP vs APC’ to commemorate the presidential election.
A press correspondent who ran into the group, reports that the game ended in a goalless draw, meaning “no victor, no vanquish’’.
The football match took place at a major road on Kollington Bus stop as it attracted football enthusiasts who had finished their accreditations. Samuel Ajibade, 16, and striker to the PDP team, said that the match was not really to spite any party but was because of the March 28 elections.
According to Ajibade, the choice for using the two main parties was because they were the prominent gladiators. “Everywhere you go, even the radio and television stations, its PDP and APC, so we decided to follow the trend and I found myself in the PDP team.’’ Ajibade said.
Another player for the PDP team, who pleaded anonymity, said that he was happy that his team performed creditably, urging the political parties to exhibit sportsmanship. Sule Ajayi, 14, goalkeeper of the APC team, said the match was staged to identify with the presidential elections since they (players) were not of the voting age.
“We know that we cannot vote because we are under 18, but we tried to do something to show our interest that we are part and parcel of today. “Although there was no winner, it doesn’t matter; what matters is that we were able to catch fun and there was no fight because nobody has put down money or cup to win,’’ he explained.
Olamilekun Abideem, 14, APC player, said that his participation at the match was due to boredom since his parents had gone to vote and there was power outage. “We did not really plan this match but we just took advantage of the atmosphere which ended goalless.’’
