Over the past seven days, two new messages have been issued by Islamic State militants showing British journalist John Cantlie.
Islamic State, also known as ISIS, currently controls huge territory in Syria and Iraq. The terror group has already beheaded two US journalists and one British aid worker in recent weeks.
But now a photojournalist and war correspondent, who has worked for several national newspapers, is in the hands of terrorists and serves as an instrument of propaganda.
BBC informs that the experienced journalist and photographer, Cantlie, is being held captive in Syria for the second time. Having been kidnapped in July 2012 and handcuffed and blindfolded for a week, he escaped with the help from the Free Syrian Army. He returned to Syria towards the end of 2012 and it was during this trip that his second kidnap occurred.
In the first video, which appeared on September 18, Cantlie says: “You’re thinking, he’s only doing this because he’s a prisoner. He’s got a gun at his head and he’s being forced to do this. Right? Well it’s true, I am a prisoner… But seeing as I’ve been abandoned by my government and my fate lies in the hands of the Islamic State I have nothing to lose. Maybe I will live, maybe I will die. But I want to take this opportunity to convey some facts that you can verify.”
However, less than a week later Islamic State released the second video introduced with the title “Lend Me Your Ears and Messages From The British Detainee John Cantlie: Episode 1″. Dressed in an orange outfit like other IS hostages seen in videos, Mr Cantlie repeated that he had been abandoned by his government.
In the new video Cantlie says that President Obama does not have the slightest intention of defeating the Islamic State, which would require the aerial slaughter, and boots on the ground demolishing of the Mujahideen.
“The Obama administration is so perplexed as they march back into Iraq, but they’re tap-dancing around the issue in a we’re getting involved but we’re not getting involved kind of way. You know, airstrikes only, no troops on the ground, limited operation time, no mission creep. All those pre-combat agreements that tend to get forgotten after the first six months of nasty tough stuff.”
Besides, he states that pre-9/11 Afghans are already back in control of large areas of Afghanistan, while the full might of the American war-machine, couldn’t destroy the Islamic State in Iraq before and now the state is far stronger than ever it was.
“Western governments,” Cantlie adds, “were caught napping by the sheer speed of the Islamic State’s growth.
“Everyone now is getting involved. Denmark and France have sent airpower, Britain is arming the Kurds, Iran is sending troops, contractors are being sought in Iraq, and even Bashar al-Assad, until this earlier this year the most hated and villainized tyrant in the Arab world, is being approached for permission to enter Syria. Can the Islamic State be defeated without addressing that part of their organization that resides in Syria, asks General Martin Demspey. The answer is no.”
He adds: “After two disastrous and hugely unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, why is it that our governments appear so keen to get involved in yet another unwinnable conflict. I’m going to show you the truth behind the systems and motivation of the Islamic State and how the Western media, the very organisation I used to work for, can twist and manipulate that truth for the public back home.”
At the end of his speech John Cantlie stated: “Join me for the next few programs, and I think you may be surprised at what you learn.”
Unlike previous videos, he appears alone and is not threatened with beheading. The murderer known as Jihadi John – who has killed three hostages and last week threatened the life of a volunteer British aid worker – does not appear.
According to the Telegraph Philip Hammond, the Foreign Secretary, said that the footage would be examined “closely”, adding: “These videos can be very distressing for the families of the individuals involved.”
Earlier this month the British Prime Minister David Cameron reiterated UK’s position that it will not pay ransoms. He said: “There is no doubt in my mind that the many tens of millions of dollars that ISIS have raised from ransom payments is going into promoting terrorism including terrorism affecting our own country.”
