Residents Raise Alarm As Robbers Take Over New Effurun Flyover

MOTORISTS and residents in Effurun have cried out over the spate of robberies at Effurun Roundabout in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, following the commissioning of the new flyover.
Those that spoke to Vanguard yesterday, said the absence of security lights on the N4.1 billion flyover delivered last month by Delta State government to reduce gridlock at the roundabout, has made the place unsafe, with criminals cashing in to rob and attack motorists and pedestrians.

Clifford Imasuen, a resident, said: “It is counter-productive and very unsafe for government to have constructed such a massive project at that spot without street lights.

“Even before the flyover, the roundabout used to be unsafe. But it is worse now, especially at night as criminals hide everywhere to rob victims”

Another resident, Joshua Chukwuma, said: “Last night, a woman who just arrived from Ughelli was attacked and robbed. They almost raped her.

“Sometimes police stay for a while and then disappear. Even with their presence, there is urgent need for street lights.”

Ogenejabor Ikimi, lawyer and rights activist, queried the state government for rushing the project to score a political point.

Oghenevwede Olomu, another resident, added that “robberies occur even in the middle of the bridge itself.

“Vehicles do not pass through at night. Besides, vehicles can easily fall down in case of accident because the handrail is so low.”

Police Area Commander, Warri Command, ACP Mohammed Mu’Azu, said he would immediately deploy his men on concentrated patrol at the spot.
