Those large, bright blue Ikea bags are great for storing miscellaneous items, but human bones might be the last thing you would expect to find inside them.
While on a visit at the Kläckeberga church in southern Sweden in late July, Kicki Karlén, an erotic author, said she was shocked to find Ikea bags overflowing
with human bones. Karlén told The Local she was researching the ruins inside the church for an upcoming book when she found the bags containing about 80 skeletons, a sight she found deeply unsettling.
“How would you feel if it was your grandmother or grandfather?” Karlén said of the discovery on her personal blog, according to a translation by USA Today.
According to an earlier report from The Local, the bones have been sitting there since 2009, when part of the church was remodeled for wheelchair access. The bones were supposed to have been reburied.
Ludvig Papmehl-Dufay, the archaeologist who was part of their excavation, told the outlet the bones “may be as much as 500 years old.”
