Officials
of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration Control
(NAFDAC) were yesterday physically assaulted and locked up inside stores
by staff of Senator Ifeanyi Ararume under the Senator’s influence.
According to THE CITY REPORTERS, following
various complaints of food poisoning from
consumers who patronize the Abuja based complex exclusive store
belonging to the Imo State born All Progressive Congress (APC) political
stalwart, officials of NAFDAC stormed the complex but were prevented
from doing their lawful duties.
Trouble was said to have started when NAFDAC officials who have been
on surveillance invaded the premises and discovered unregistered herbal
teas with therapeutic claims and various ranges of other unregistered
cosmetic products on display at the expensive store.
According to some eyewitness accounts, the NAFDAC operatives who were
on their routine duties were assaulted and subsequently locked up
inside the stores to prevent them from carrying out their lawful
assignment of screening the products on sale.
Irked by the treatment of its official, NAFDAC ordered the closure of the popular and expensive Abuja shopping complex.
But few hours later, however, the complex was reopened in what one of
the regulatory agency’s staff who craved anonymity claimed was an order
from above.
“It is so annoying that this is happening under APC government who has been preaching zero tolerance on corruption,” he said.
Nafdac is yet to officially react to the incident as at the time of filing this report.
