No fewer than 760 Fulani have in the last five months lost their lives to self-security volunteers, otherwise known as Yan Sakai, in Zamfara State.
State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Association, Alhaji Tukur Jangebe, who disclosed this while speaking to Vanguard in Gusau, Zamfara State capital, said the group also hauled away 6,790 cows, 13,400 sheep, over 400 camels, food items, motorcycles and burnt many houses within the last four months.
He said reports received by the association across the state indicated that every week, members of his association were killed by the group.
Jangebe lamented the free movement of the group along with their dangerous weapons from one community to another, including local council headquarters of the state without hindrance.
He appealed to the federal and state governments to come to their aid by stopping the activities of the group.
He said: “Last Friday, I was in Sokoto when my people called and told me that security volunteers have stormed Tungar Lada of Talata Mafara Local Government with sophisticated weapons.
“I immediately called the attention of the state Commissioner of Police and Commanding Officer,
One Based Ammunition depot, Gusau, and sought their assistance and intervention.”
A source at 232 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Gusau, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed to Vanguard that about 200 self-security volunteers were arrested by security personnel.
When contacted, state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sanusi Amiru, confirmed the in-cident in Talata Mafara Local Government, which left many Fulani with various degrees of injuries.
He added that a team of joint securitymen dispatched to the area had rescued all the animals carted away by the group and that efforts were on to arrest the perpetrators.
