No fewer than four persons were feared
killed, while many vehicles were destroyed on Monday at the Dei-Dei
Market, which serves a satellite town in the FCT, when a commercial
motorcyclist allegedly stabbed five traders.
It was learnt that the stabbing was due to a motorcycle accident in which a woman was seriously injured.
The stabbing provoked a riot by traders who were angered by the turn of events.
An eyewitness, who identified himself as
Daniel, explained that the motorcyclist allegedly stabbed five of the
people that were berating him, killing one of them instantly.
Three others were said to have died at the hospital and this led to a riot by traders, leading to destruction of many vehicles.
The violent protest attracted the attention of policemen who fired tear gas to disperse the traders and restore peace.
Daniel said, “When the sympathisers started berating him over the reckless manner he rode the motorcycle, the okada
man got angry, brought out a dagger and stabbed five people, one of whom
died immediately. This led to a riot as traders and other people
protested the incident.”
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer,
Altine Daniel, could not be reached for comments as calls to her phone
indicated that it was not available. Also, a text message sent to her
has yet to be replied to as of press time.
