Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, a former Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, has told President Goodluck Jonathan to forget about his second term in office.
The cardinal, who gave the advice on Sunday while speaking with SaharaReporters, said Jonathan does not deserve a second term in office.
The retired prelate, who was a founding member and former leader of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), hinted that he had earlier told the President to forget about reelection when he asked him for prayers.
He said they had the conversation while he was still a deputy, when President Jonathan asked him for prayers and he asked the President what his prayer points were. He said Jonathan revealed to him that he wants to run for second term.
Okogie said the aforementioned incident occurred in the presence of four other people, where he told the President Pointblank that he could win the election but might have challenges ruling the country peacefully.
The cardinal further stated that President Jonathan is crowded by bootlickers, who always decline to tell him the truth and continue to mislead him. He described the President’s endorsement as the sole candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as dangerous and called on the President to learn from the country’s history about sole party candidates.
Okogie, who also used the medium to take a swipe at the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), alleged that the organisation has been compromised. He blamed the organisation’s former President, Reverend Sunday Mbang, of turning it to an accessory of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
He, however, noted that what Mbang did with the organization was trivial compared to what the current CAN President; Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor is doing with the organisation.
Reacting to the recent attacks on him by some pro- Jonathan and Oritsejafor followers, the prelate said verbal attacks were nothing compared to what he had experienced at the frontline during the Nigerian civil war when he was a chaplain.
Meanwhile, the cardinal, who is renowned for his open-mindedness and outspokenness against both abusive and corrupt military leaders and corrupt elected officials, recently took a swipe at the current president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ayo Oritsejafor, for making a mockery of the association by his closeness to President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
