Barely two days after multiple explosions rocked Nigeria’s capital city
of Abuja, killing up to 20 people, another round of multiple explosions
have been reported in the capital of Borno state, Maiduguri, in what
appears to be a renewed offensive by terrorist group Boko Haram which is
suspected to be behind the attacks.
Vanguard reports that the multiple explosions on Sunday occurred on the outskirts of Maiduguri, which has been repeatedly attacked by Boko Haram in the recent past.
Residents of the city were said to have reported hearing loud explosions in such areas as Kayamla and Dalori, and that at least 10 people have been confirmed dead after the explosions while many were injured.
The recent suicide bomb attacks suspected to have been carried out by Boko Haram have been described by Nigerian government officials as mere desperate attempts, which indicate that the group is being beaten by the military.
During an interview with Channels Television on Saturday night, special adviser on media and publicity to the president, Mr Femi Adesina, described Friday’s multiple explosions in Abuja as the “last desperate kicks of a dying horse” and that because the Boko Haram terrorist group was being defeated in combat by the Nigerian Army, the group had resorted to attacking ‘soft targets’.
Adesina however stated that the attacks on soft targets will not stop the Nigerian military from defeating the terrorists by December 2015 as they have been mandated by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The presidential spokesman similarly stated that when genuine leaders of the Boko Haram islamist sect are identified and they are willing to cease the bombings and killings, the federal government will be willing to negotiate with the group.
