Over 1000 members of the dreaded Islamist group, Boko Haram, have been arrested in the South-West, according to the Sarkin Hausawa of Lagos, Alhaji Sani Kabir.
According to Vanguard, Sarkin Hausawa of Lagos, Alhaji Sani Kabir, on October 16, 2014, told the Federal Government that northerners in the South West arrested the Boko Haram members saying the arrests were made at different times.
Alhaji Kabir, while speaking during the visit of the Arewa Council of Chiefs in the South West to the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, in the Minister’s office, said those arrested were Boko Haram members who fled from the Civilian JTF/military fierce battle against the sect in the North-East.
He also stated among those arrested were the ones who came to the South West to continue their havoc.
Alhaji Sani Kabir, who said the Council is putting measure in place to avoid the Boko Haram having a place in the South West, said: “So far in the South west, we have peace and this is achieved through the collaboration of Arewa people and Arewa chiefs.
“If you can confirm with the security agencies, we have arrested more than 1000 Boko Haram members throughout the south west states. Any suspicious movement, we promptly report to the security agents because we believe that the problem is actually the Nigerian problem but if there is any breakdown of law and order in the south west, we are the prime targets irrespective of whether you are a member of Boko Haram or not.
“All the Arewa sarkis (kings) in the south west are up and doing to make sure that we do not allow any breakdown of law and order in our communities.”
Alhaji Sani Kabir said the Boko Haram members’ arrest was made possible by their carefully observing their behaviours with some leaders being able to identify considering they are also from the North and JTF identifying them.
They were immediately handed over to security agencies once identified, Alhaji Sani Kabir says.
He also thanked the Arewa Council of Chiefs in the Southwest for their efforts in working with security agencies in ensuring there is maximum security in the Southwest and not experiencing the challenges faced in the North-West
