Family Members Drown As Boat Capsizes In Kaduna

There was tragedy at Ungwar Sarkin Mata, Kagom District in Jema’a Local Government Area, LGA, of Kaduna State after a boat conveying a family of eight on a raging, capsized yesterday, killing seven family members, authorities said.
The family  members were braving the turbulent  river  to their farm to harvest maize when the boat overturned, drowning 7,  living only one person who knew how to swim as the only survivor, it was gathered.
“Kagom District share boundary with Sanga LGA. The killing of seven people was the major water mishap recorded in our area this year,” a resident, Bulus Musa said. “This is what we go through every year. Many of such cases are hardly known. But even when reported, nothing is done about it,” he said.
“The challenge we have here is lack of a bridge. We need a bridge that will connect us with Sanga LGA, and adjoining areas, because people keep dying on this river trying to connect these places.  .  Government must come to our aid. These poor farmers were on there way to farm but they  died,” Musa lamented.
Vice Chairman of Jema’a LGA, Isiaka Ladan who visited the scene with officials of Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, described the incident as unfortunate.
Ladan said five corpses have been found, with  one survivor while emergency workers and locals were still searching for the two corpses.
